Three levels of study programmes (Undergraduate, Graduate and Doctoral) are being implemented at the Faculty of Economics. All are taught in Lithuanian language although a large number of courses are offered for foreign students in English.
The Faculty is seeking to attract specialists-practitioners in finance, banking, insurance, audit and other fields for teaching positions at the University, as closer ties between academic studies and practice have their own advantages: they enable the illustration of theoretical knowledge with cases in business practice, and thus contribute to developing theoretical skills and their application in practice. The cohesion between theory and practice is augmented by the fact that majority of teachers who work at Vilnius University simultaneously take part in the activities of national and international professional organisations, serving in high positions, e.g. the President of Lithuanian Association of Accountants and Auditors, Member of the Executive Committee of the European Accounting Association, Vice President of the International Association of Commodity Science and Technology, etc. Valuable contribution to the study programme is provided by visiting professors from Western European universities, Fulbright and other international programmes. The possibility to initiate modern programmes at Vilnius University has arisen only after Lithuania regained independence. The emerging market economy has raised the demand for management specialists, and this was reflected in the corresponding demand for education. The study programmes of Management and Business Administration soon became the most popular in the country. As a result of a gradual switch towards the new study programmes, new disciplines that match European academic standards were introduced at the Faculty, such as Management, Strategic Management, Business Risk, Personnel Management, Quality Management, Motivation Theories, Intercultural Management, Marketing Research, etc. Their introduction into the study programme was to a great extent the outcome of the internships of Faculty staff at foreign universities (in the framework of EU TEMPUS and other international programmes). These internships enabled the interception of the contents of managerial disciplines and their teaching experience, and they helped to supplement the Faculty’s library with the most recent textbooks and scientific publications in the field. During the recent decade, teachers of the Faculty completed internships at the following universities and organisations: London, Oxford, Sheffield, Wales, Aalborg, Bonn, Stockholm, Harvard, Illinois, Georgetown, South Carolina, De Paul (USA), Dalhausie (Canada), Copenhagen Business School, Helsinki School of Business Economics, Norwegian Institute of Audit, the International Monetary Fund, the central banks of England, Germany and Italy. Others have participated in course preparation and improvement seminars, organised by the Curriculum Resource Centre of the Central European University.
